As millions of other students just like you graduate from
high school every year you are probably wondering what are you going to
do with your life. Well there is a job just waiting for you that will
challenge your mind, body, and change your life. It is the U.S. selective
service. But you probably are asking several questions.
What qualifications must I
meet in order to join the Military?
The military requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residency for example
a green card a high school diploma or GED, good health, and minimum scores
on the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery or (ASVAB).
You should be between the ages of 17 and 35 and have no criminal record.
Physically, the services require that minimum and maximum heights fall
between 5' 0'' to 6' 8" for men and 4' 10'' to 6' 8" for women.
Weight standards vary among the services, so talk to a recruiter about
them. Some job specialties have additional standards, and some qualifications
may be waived on a case to case basis. They vary by service. To be absolutely
sure, discuss these details with a recruiter.
I'm not sure which service I'd like best.
How do I decide?
It is best to talk to people who have already had experience in the military.
To determine which service would be the best fit for you, find friends
or relatives who have been in the Military, and pick their brains! Visit
the services' websites and request information from them (Army, Navy,
Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, Army National Guard, Air National
Guard).

What's the Montgomery GI Bill?
For active-duty service with an honorable discharge, the Montgomery GI
Bill provides $28,800 in educational support. That means your contribution
is only $1,200. The Montgomery GI Program provides up to 3 years of education
benefits, which may be used for degree and certificate programs, flight
training, apprenticeship/on-the-job training, and correspondence courses.
Generally, benefits are payable for 10 years following your release from
active duty. In the past, the value of the Montgomery GI Bill has increased
annually.
What kind of training can I get in the
military?
Each of the five services that offer active duty—Army, Marines, Navy, Air
Force, Coast Guard—has its own essence. And each service offers great benefits
and many job opportunities, many of them high tech. The U.S. Military operates
a huge job training network, which includes over schools teaching over thousands
of technical and vocational courses. The military trains because the services
needed trained people constantly for hundreds of jobs around the world . Some
of the jobs are equal to computer programming, medical technician, and health-care.
Nearly every civilian job has a military equivalent but in the military, your
training is free. That's right, free.
