BANK HISTORY

1977-2002

The Seaman High School Bank's 50th year was celebrated with a dinner at the Topeka Elks Club on May 11, 1977. The first bank president, Mr. Paul R. Givens was in attendance and reminisced about the early days in the bank. He presented the bank with his original check and deposit books, issued in 1927. Mrs. More, formerly Ms. Ward, also spoke at the dinner.

On June 30, 1977, Mr. Carl Bowen, executive vice-president of the Kansas Banker's Association, presented the Seaman Bank with a certificate in recognition of the 50th anniversary, and as a tribute for pioneering a unique and service to the community.

The Topeka Magazine published a story on the Seaman Bank, May 1976. Kansas Banker's Association magazine published an article about the bank in the 1977 issue.


On October 24, 1980, the two millionth dollar was deposited in the Seaman High School Bank.

Seaman Bank Capital reached $40,000 in 1980 and $101,513.71 was deposited that year.

Dorothy Woodburn retired in 1984 after 19 years as the bank sponsor. Peggy Norris became the bank sponsor in her place.

On February 20, 1994, Star Magazine did a story on the Bank entitled "Dollars & Sense."

ABC taped the banking students perforiming their duties on March 4, 1994. THis tape can be found in the bottom of the cabinet in the third cashier's window.

In 1996, the Topeka Capital-Journal wrote a story about the bank called "Experience a great teacher for 69 years."

Peggy Norris retired after serving as bank sponsor for 11 years in 1996. Kevin Hoffmans became the bank sponsor and currently serves in the capacity.

In 1998, the Topeka Capital-Journal ran a story about the bank entitled "Seaman High Students Keep Books Balanced at School Bank."

Money out of the undivided profit purchased the Monet paintings in the spring of 1999. These pictures can be seen of the south wall of the bank.

In 2002, the Seaman Bank celebrated it's 75th Anniversary.
